The Cityzens are reshaping the squad for new head coach Enzo Maresca
Manchester City are weighing up a blockbuster move for Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali, The Athletic reports on Wednesday.
The Italy international, 26, has emerged as one of City's leading midfield targets, with the Premier League giants seriously considering a move despite the enormous financial commitment that would be required to prise him away from Newcastle.
City's interest comes amid growing uncertainty over the composition of their midfield. Bernardo Silva has already left for Real Madrid on a free transfer, while Rodri is yet to decide whether he will remain at the Etihad beyond the final year of his contract.
The Spanish midfielder, currently on World Cup duty, is expected to announce his plans after the tournament, leaving City preparing for multiple scenarios as they reshape the squad for new head coach Enzo Maresca.
Tonali is not the only midfielder on City's radar.
The club remain in talks with Nottingham Forest over a deal for Elliot Anderson, who is valued at a figure that could break the British transfer record. City's pursuit of Tonali is understood to be independent of their interest in Anderson, raising the possibility of both players arriving in the same transfer window.
Such an ambitious double swoop would likely cost in excess of £200 million, underlining the scale of the rebuild being considered at the Etihad.
Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur remain firmly in the race for Tonali and have already held positive discussions with the player's representatives. New Spurs boss Roberto De Zerbi is known to be a long-time admirer of his fellow Italian and views the Newcastle midfielder as a cornerstone signing for his project in north London.
