The Italian is on the radar of numerous teams, with the club from North London standing out as the top candidate — the same one that once tried to sign him

Arsenal appear to have cooled their interest in Sandro Tonali, following last winter’s dramatic deadline-day rumours linking the midfielder with a move from Newcastle United. At the time, Newcastle insisted they hadn’t heard from the Gunners regarding Tonali, although reports suggested that his agent, Giuseppe Riso, had put the player’s name forward to Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta. Riso later denied those claims, which were initially reported by The Athletic.

According to ChronicleLive, however, Arsenal were made aware of Tonali’s uncertain situation but ultimately chose not to pursue the matter further. Since then, the Gunners have held internal discussions about potential summer signings, and Tonali reportedly did not feature on their initial shortlist.

Like Newcastle, Arsenal are navigating financial constraints under PSR rules, with one source estimating they may have only around £40m available to spend this summer. That figure is likely to be supplemented by player sales, with Martin Odegaard and Gabriel Martinelli among the potential departures.

The north London side are also feeling the financial impact of a £268m summer outlay on players such as Eberechi Eze (£67.5m), Viktor Gyokeres (£63.7m), and Martin Zubimendi (£56m).

Tonali, meanwhile, has since been linked with both Manchester United and Real Madrid, but Newcastle are keen for the midfielder to stay, aware that no Italian club has the resources to secure his services.

Regardless of whether Manchester United qualify for the Champions League, Newcastle want to see Tonali show commitment to the club. The midfielder has even mentioned the possibility of joining the club’s leadership group. For now, though, Arsenal are effectively off the table: one source described a move to the Emirates Stadium this summer as “impossible.”
