The ambitious Phase Two upgrade, jointly funded by the Siaya County Government and the National Government, is already underway and is expected to transform the facility into one of the country's leading sporting venues.

Upon completion, the stadium will be better positioned to host major football and athletics events while enhancing Siaya's status as an emerging sports hub.

Providing an update on the project, Siaya Governor James Orengo highlighted the progress achieved through the first phase of development, which was fully financed by the county government.

"Siaya County is home to one of the finest sporting arenas in the country, with the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium already boasting a world-class football pitch, tartan track and VVIP lounges. Phase One was fully funded by the County Government of Siaya," Orengo said.

According to the governor, the ongoing second phase will introduce new spectator terraces, a protective roof canopy, a tarmacked internal ring road and enhanced security walls as part of efforts to elevate the facility to international standards.

"Upon completion, this flagship project will establish Siaya as a premier regional sports hub, empowering local youth talent and igniting the economy through global sports tourism," he added.

The expansion comes at a time when Kenya is witnessing an unprecedented wave of investment in sports infrastructure ahead of future continental and international competitions.

Across the country, several stadium projects are either under construction or undergoing extensive renovations, including the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, in Nairobi.

Other facilities receiving major constructions include Migori Stadium, Moi Stadium Kisumu, Kericho Green Stadium and Gusii Stadium.

Additionally, construction plans of the 60,000-seater Talanta Stadium, a flagship project is nearing completion as Kenya is to co-host the forthcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) alongside Uganda and Tanzania

Although Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium has yet to host regular FKF Premier League or National Super League matches, it has already staged several notable fixtures.

The venue hosted record Kenyan champions Gor Mahia during their exhibition match against Uganda Premier League side Kitara FC during the stadium's grand opening.

It also welcomed Siaya-based Dero FC and AFC Leopards in a 2025 Mozzart Bet Cup fixture, with the former champions securing a 3-1 victory.

With construction progressing steadily, the stadium is poised to become a cornerstone of sports development in the region, offering a platform for nurturing local talent while attracting sporting events capable of stimulating economic growth and tourism in Siaya County.
