
'It will be a big moment in my career' - AFC Leopards winger on playing first Mashemeji Derby

AFC Leopards winger James Kinyanjui has explained why the upcoming Mashemeji Derby will be a big moment of his career.

Leopards will face arch-rivals Gor Mahia in the 98th Mashemeji Derby set for Sunday, 7 December at the Nyayo National Stadium.
Having joined the 1998 FKF Premier League champions in August from KCB FC, Kinyanjui, if selected, will have a first taste of the derby, something that will be so significant to his career.
“It will be a big achievement in my career. I have never played in such a match, and it is one that I will be proud of,” said Kinyanjui.
The former Bandari FC winger, who was speaking at the sidelines of the team's training session on Thursday, 4 December at Marist International University, Karen also revealed his admiration for the fixture as a Kenyan footballer.
“I have longed for the moment because the two clubs have the biggest fan base in the Kenyan league. I have played for several clubs, but none had such a fanbase,” he added.
Ahead of the match, Gor Mahia are at the summit of the league table with 19 points, five points above Leopards, who are seventh on the table.
Kinyanjui says the team is keen to improve on their standings.

]“We also know how competitive the league is this season, with few points separating teams, and so we will be eyeing a win that will push us closer to the top,” he said.
Despite the pressure that comes with the match, and K’Ogalo’s form this season, Kinyanjui exuded confidence that the team will emerge victorious.
“We will approach it just like any other game, but with the aim of making our fans proud at the end of the day,” he remarked.
