How much is Bayern wealthier than Borussia?

The difference in income explains Bayern's cruel domination in Bundesliga in the last decade and more

We have entered the final third of the Bundesliga season, and the champion is 99 percent already known. Defending title holders FC Bayern Munich are eight points ahead of their only real challengers, Borussia Dortmund, ahead of Der Klassiker at Signal Iduna Park. A victory for Vincent Kompany’s side could all but settle the title race, allowing Bayern to manage the remainder of the domestic campaign and shift their full focus to chasing the “big-eared trophy” in the UEFA Champions League.

Harry Kane and his teammates have been a goal-scoring machine this season, averaging nearly four goals per match. The Englishman is once again a scoring powerhouse in the league, while Michael Olise and Liverpool newcomer Luis Diaz have also been outstanding. The recovering Jamal Musiala is steadily regaining top form as well. Meanwhile, the “Millionaires,” coached by Niko Kovac, are shaken after their Champions League elimination. Even a 2–0 advantage from Signal Iduna Park was not enough to knock out Atalanta BC in Bergamo. For the home side, this is the last real chance to stay in even a symbolic title race with the Bavarians. Still, it would take a miracle for Niko Kovac’s team to dethrone FC Bayern Munich. The team from North Rhine-Westphalia has suffered only one defeat in their last 31 Bundesliga matches, which shows just how much the support of the famous “Yellow Wall” means to them.

One of the reasons for such a cruel Bayern domination in Bundesliga, and over their bitter rivals is money. And the numbers are staggering. Bayern Munich recorded 978.3 million euros in the 2024/25 financial year. Borussia Dortmund has ‘just’ 526 million. Even 10 years ago, Bayern's revenue was higher at 626.8 million than Dortmund's is now. This kind of money allows the Bavarians to be very generous with wages. The amount of costs for all Bayern employees is 408.3 million euros, out of which, 310 million is for the player’s budget. On the other hand, Dortmund spends around 190 million euros per year on its professional football operations and this amount is on the edge for the club and they will probably have to trim it down come June.

In Europe, the difference is not so big, as Borussia Dortmund earned 102.1 million euros in the Champions League in 2024/25, while Bayern Munich earned 105.8 million. But the big thing is match-day revenue and sponsors. Bayern Munich's total revenue per home averaged 5.7 million euros (5th place) – compared to just 2.2 million for Borussia Dortmund (21st place). According to Bild, Bayern's profit per home game is estimated at around three million euros, and the main reason is the stadium - Allianz Arena has been fully paid off for over ten years while Westfalenstadion, was completed in 1974 so the club has to finance the various restorations, which cost them between five and ten million euros per season.

In 2024/25 season, Bayern generated 240.4 million euros in revenue from sponsorship and marketing, and 150.5 million from merchandising. Dortmund earned around 150 million in sponsorship revenue last season (2024/25). As far as shirt sales and other merchandise, the situation is even worse for Dortmund. They earned around 63 million in 2025, which is tiny, compared to Bayern’s 189 million.
