Akida joined Kibera at the start of the season, marking her return to competitive football after a year in the cold

Harambee Starlets striker Esse Akida was the heroine as Kibera Soccer Women secured a 1-0 win over Gideon Starlets in FKF Women's Premier League match played on Wednesday, 25 March at the Marist International University, Karen.

Prior to the match, Kibera Soccer were sixth on the league table with 26 points, 15 shy of league leaders Kenya Police Bullets, while Gideon Starlets were 10th with 17 points.

Kibera headed into the match on an averagely good form having lost one, drawn two and won two of their previous five matches, including back-to-back wins over Kayole Starlets and Madira Soccer Assassins.

Gideon were equally in the same form, winning two, drawing two and losing one of their previous five matches, with the latest being a barren draw against Bungoma Queens.

Kibera dominated the early proceedings of the match, but with little goalscoring opportunities as Gideon sat back to prevent early damage.

The Nairobi-based side had a big chance in the 22nd minute from a corner kick, but it was well cleared by the Gideon defense.

Kibera would then take the lead in the 34th minute when Pauline Ochieng found Akida, who expertly placed her strike into the back of the net, a lead they took to the break.

Both teams pushed for goals in the second half; Kibera to kill off the game and Gideon for an equalizer and possibly a winner but none was forthcoming.

With the win, Kibera climbed up to fifth on the log with 28 points as Gideon remained in the relegation zone at 10th with 17 points.

At the summit of the log lies Police Bullets with 40 points, two more than Ulinzi Starlets as Trinity close the top three with 34 points.
