The Kenyan government has issued a fresh progress report on the ongoing modernisation and expansion of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium in Siaya, with the facility set to undergo a major transformation into a world-class multi-sport complex as the country prepares to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

In an update shared on his official Facebook page, Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration Raymond Omollo outlined the key milestones achieved so far, revealing that Phase II of the project is progressing steadily through a joint partnership between the National Government and the County Government of Siaya.
Among the most significant upgrades is the expansion of the stadium's seating capacity from the current 5,000 to between 15,000 and 20,000 spectators, a move expected to position the venue among the country's leading sporting facilities.
The redevelopment will also see the installation of a standard 110-metre by 68-metre football pitch alongside an eight-lane, 400-metre tartan athletics track, allowing the stadium to host both elite football and athletics competitions.
Structural steel columns are already being erected to support a full-roof canopy that will enhance the match-day experience for fans while bringing the facility closer to international standards.
According to Omollo, the project forms part of the government's broader strategy of investing in modern sports infrastructure to support Kenya's preparations for AFCON 2027 while creating opportunities for youth development and nurturing sporting talent across the country.
"As Kenya positions itself as a premier sporting destination ahead of the CAF Africa Cup of Nations 2027 and other regional competitions, the Government continues to make strategic investments in sports infrastructure to nurture local talent, create opportunities for youth and elevate the country's capacity to host international events," Omollo stated.
He added that Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium is one of the flagship projects under this national vision.
"One such investment is the ongoing modernisation and expansion of the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium in Siaya Town, which is transforming into a world-class sporting facility.
"Building on the gains of Phase I, which delivered a FIFA-standard football pitch, VIP pavilions, changing rooms and basketball courts, Phase II is significantly upgrading the facility through a partnership between the National and County Governments.

"The works, implemented by the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), are expanding spectator capacity from 5,000 seats to between 15,000 and 20,000 seats, while installation of structural steel columns for a full-roof canopy is also underway.
"The upgraded stadium will feature a standard 110-metre by 68-metre football field alongside an eight-lane, 400-metre tartan athletics track, positioning it as a multi-sport venue capable of hosting high-level competitions and serving as a hub for talent development in the region."
Omollo further noted that the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is supporting the project through coordination of national government functions, stakeholder engagement and security planning to ensure smooth implementation of the works and the successful hosting of future sporting events.

Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium is among several sports infrastructure projects currently being upgraded across the country as Kenya accelerates preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which it will co-host alongside Uganda and Tanzania.
Other key projects include the construction of the 10,000-seater Migori Stadium, the redevelopment of Thika Stadium, the modernisation of Moi Stadium in Kisumu, the expansion of Gusii Stadium to a 14,000-seat capacity and the near-complete 60,000-seater Raila Odinga Stadium.
The ambitious programme underscores the government's commitment to leaving a lasting sporting legacy beyond AFCON 2027.
Besides increasing Kenya's capacity to host continental and international competitions, the upgraded facilities are expected to provide modern training environments for athletes, stimulate local economies and inspire the next generation of sporting talent across the country.
