The government of Kenya has provided a fresh update on the construction of the new Ol Kalou Stadium, a flagship sports infrastructure project expected to transform Nyandarua County into one of the country's leading high-performance training destinations.

In a statement shared on his Facebook page, Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration Raymond Omollo said the facility is being developed into a modern sports complex capable of hosting both local and international competitions while capitalising on the region's high-altitude advantage.
Once complete, the stadium will feature a 10,000-seat capacity, an eight-lane, 400-metre tartan athletics track, and a FIFA-standard football pitch fitted with advanced drainage and automated irrigation systems.
The project will also include a state-of-the-art main pavilion equipped with modern changing rooms, medical facilities, media spaces and VIP amenities to meet international hosting standards.
"Perched more than 2,400 metres above sea level, Ol Kalou offers the ideal high-altitude environment for endurance training, making it a natural destination for athletes and sports teams seeking a competitive edge," Omollo said.
He added that the project extends beyond sports infrastructure, describing it as a strategic investment aimed at positioning Nyandarua County as a premier destination for sports training, talent development and sports tourism.
"The ongoing development of Ol Kalou Stadium is therefore not only a major infrastructure investment, but also a strategic effort to position Nyandarua County as a premier hub for sports training, talent development and sports tourism," he noted.
According to Omollo, the facility forms part of the government's broader agenda to modernise sports infrastructure while ensuring more regions are well positioned to benefit from major continental tournaments, including the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which Kenya will co-host alongside Uganda and Tanzania.
He further noted that the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration will continue supporting the implementation of the project through enhanced coordination among government agencies to ensure its timely completion.
The Ol Kalou project is one of several major stadium developments currently underway as Kenya ramps up preparations for AFCON 2027.
Other facilities under construction include the 10,000-seater Migori Stadium, Thika Stadium, Moi Stadium Kisumu, and the 14,000-seater Kericho and Gusii stadiums.
Expansion works are also ongoing at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium, where capacity is being increased to 25,000, as well as at Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega.
The projects form part of the government's wider plan to deliver world-class sporting infrastructure, strengthen talent development pathways and enhance the country's capacity to host major international competitions.
Meanwhile, work on the flagship 60,000-seater Raila Odinga Stadium continue to gather pace, with only a few finishing touches remaining before the ultra-modern facility is ready for completion.
The stadium is expected to become Kenya's premier football venue and one of the centrepiece arenas for the 2027 AFCON, reaffirming the country's commitment to delivering world-class infrastructure ahead of the continental showpiece.
