
Gor Mahia head coach linked with Ghana national team job

Should he get the nod, he will return to the side he led between January 2020 and September 2021
Gor Mahia may have to shop for a new coach, if the Ghanaian national team considers Charles Akonnor for the vacant Black Stars job.

The vacancy came after the Ghana Football Association (GFA) parted ways with coach Otto Addo on Monday, 30 March, following their 2-1 defeat to Germany in Stuttgart.
“Ghana Football Association has parted ways with Black Stars head coach Otto Addo with immediate effect.
The Association wishes to thank Otto Addo sincerely for his contribution to the team and wishes him the best of luck in his future endeavours.
The Ghana Football Association will communicate the new technical direction of the Black Stars in due course,” read the statement by GFA.
The defeat to Germany was preceded by a 5-1 thrashing by Austria on Friday 27 March in Vienna, causing unrest in the GFA.
With the position now vacant, several names have been floated in Ghanaian media including Sporty FM, Accra with Akonnor making the cut.
According to the media outlet, Akonnor is one of the four local tacticians including Kwasi Appiah, Laryea Kingston and Desmond Ofei, who are linked to the position.

Ghana have also been linked with some of the experienced foreign coaches in African football, including 76-year-old German coach Winfred Schafer, who currently serves as Technical Director of the Black Stars.
Others are celebrated French coach Herve Renard, who currently plies his trade with the Saudi Arabia national team and has two Africa Cup of Nation (AFCON) titles with Zambia and Ivory Coast, as well as Belgian coach Tom Seintfiet, who is currently the head coach of the Mali national team.
Also linked with the Black Stars coaching role is Moroccan coach Walid Regragui, who guided the Moroccan national team to the semi finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Should Akonnor land the appointment, he will be making a return to the Ghana national team, having led the team between January 2020 and September 2021.
Akonnor also represented the national team during his playing career, making 51 appearances and scoring 13 goals in the process.
With 70 days before the commencement of the World Cup, GFA is expected to expedite the appointment of Addo’s successor.
