Good move or "suicide"? Ghana part ways with manager 79 days before their first WC game

Four consecutive defeats in friendly matches last November and during the previous week cost Otto Addo his job, as the Black Stars are now without a coach, with the World Cup just around the corner

In about three months, we'll know whether this decision was an excellent move or a shot in their own foot. Either way, a difficult, unpopular, and a bit surprising call has been made, and now there's no turning back.

As of today, Otto Addo is no longer Ghana head coach!

Only 79 days before their first match in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Black Stars and the 50-year-old tactician parted ways after a two-year cooperation.

Four consecutive defeats in friendly matches last November and during the previous week - to Japan (2-0), South Korea (1-0), Austria (5-1), and Germany (2-1) - have apparently cost Addo his job.

This way, the Ghanaian's second spell on the Black Stars' bench ends without a WC appearance, unlike the previous one, when he left following his team's group-stage exit at the 2022 World Cup.

He returned to the position in March 2024 and earned the trust of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) despite the national team's abysmal performance in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, when it finished bottom of its group behind Angola, Sudan, and Niger.

Nevertheless, the 2026 World Cup qualifiers were a whole other story, as Ghana dominantly topped their qualifying group.

Still, instead of peacefully preparing for the three vital clashes in North America against Panama, England, and Croatia, the Ghanaians opted for a "road less travelled".

The GFA announced the decision on its website, issuing a short statement.

"The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has parted ways with the Head Coach of the senior men’s national team (Black Stars), Otto Addo effective immediately."

"The Association wishes to thank Otto Addo sincerely for his contribution to the team and wishes him the best of luck in his future endeavours."

"The Ghana Football Association will communicate the new technical direction of the Black Stars in due course."

Who'll lead the Black Stars in the following period and the WC remains unknown for now, though the new boss has to be named as soon as possible, given that the major tournament is just around the corner and the clock is ticking.

In the end, Addo's departure may be a "shock therapy" that yields results, or it may turn out to be a catastrophic call that leads to a fiasco.

Ghana's 2026 World Cup run will tell.
