On Wednesday, the Electoral Board, led by Gichu Wahome, released the election roadmap, outlining the nomination fees for various positions.
Candidates vying for the chairman’s seat must pay Ksh500,000, while those running for vice chairman, secretary general, and treasurer positions must part with Ksh450,000 and Ksh400,000, respectively.
The deadline for payments is midnight Friday.
The announcement has sparked outrage, with outgoing club treasurer Dolphina Odhiambo, who is eyeing the chairman’s seat, leading the protests.
"Where do they expect us to get Ksh500,000 in just two days? More importantly, who verifies that those in office have paid the money genuinely?" Odhiambo questioned.
She further argued that the exorbitant fees were a deliberate move to lock out challengers.
“In 2020, we only paid Ksh20,000 to run for any position. This is nothing short of extortion,” she lamented.
Odhiambo has also called for an independent body, preferably the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), to handle the funds and monitor the club’s accounts to prevent irregular withdrawals
Despite her frustrations, Odhiambo ruled out taking legal action, stating that her opponents would exploit such a move to maintain their grip on power.
Gor Mahia’s long-serving chairman, Ambrose Rachier, is seeking re-election after 15 years in charge, during which the club has won nine league titles
For the secretary-general position, incumbent Sam Ochola faces a tough battle against former Kathani High School Principal Canor Arum.
Vice Chairman Francis Wasuna will again face off against Sally Bollo, his 2020 rival and former club treasurer. Victor Mbaka has also thrown his hat into the ring.
Meanwhile, Gerphas Okuku, a current Executive Committee member, will battle Dalmas Philip Nyakwana and Migono Migono for the treasurer’s seat.
The board, which also includes Ben Sihanya, Omondi Oketch, Henry Ogoye, and Rose Lillian, is expected to release the final list of registered voters.
