Globe-trotting coach handed the mission to revive Black Stars after disastrous run ahead of the World Cup

Carlos Queiroz is back on the international stage - and straight into another rescue mission.

The 73-year-old has been appointed head coach of Ghana ahead of the 2026 World Cup, tasked with stabilising a side in free fall.

Queiroz replaces Otto Addo, who was dismissed earlier this month after a worrying downturn in results. Ghana arrived at this appointment on the back of four consecutive defeats, including heavy friendly losses to Austria and Germany, and the added disappointment of failing to qualify for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations.

Enter a familiar figure in crisis scenarios.

With a coaching career spanning more than three decades, Queiroz brings vast experience - including leading Iran to three consecutive World Cups and guiding Portugal to the knockout stages in 2010.

His first test will come quickly: a friendly against Mexico on May 22, followed by a final warm-up clash with Wales in Cardiff.

Then, the real challenge begins.

Ghana open their World Cup campaign against Panama in Toronto on June 17, before facing England and Croatia in what promises to be a demanding group.

Few coaches boast a resume quite like Queiroz's. From a brief but high-profile stint at Real Madrid to years alongside Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, where he helped deliver multiple Premier League titles and a Champions League crown, his career has spanned continents and challenges alike.

Ghana will be his ninth national team. And perhaps one of his toughest assignments yet.

Current Gor Mahia boss Charles Akonnor was one of the candidates for the vacant job following Addo's sacking, but in the end, Ghanaians decided to go for the globally renowned name with vast experience, whose authority should make the difference and be the pillar of this shock therapy. The outcome? We'll see in a few months...
