The 17-year old Eichhorn signed a long-term deal with Leverkusen

When you start playing football, you dream of the biggest clubs from day one. That's why, when those same clubs come knocking, it's difficult to even stop and think. Most players open the door immediately, afraid the opportunity may never come again, without worrying whether they might get lost among countless other talents or spend years sitting on the bench. However, Germany has produced a completely different story—almost an anomaly in modern football. One of the country's most talented teenagers has decided to ignore the unwritten rules of the transfer market and show that common sense can still prevail.

The player in question is Kennet Eichhorn, who could become one of the biggest stories of the June transfer window. Earlier this month, the 16-year-old turned down Bayern Munich, and now he has also rejected Liverpool. According to Sky Sports Germany, the Hertha Berlin wonderkid officially thanked Liverpool for their offer over the past 24 hours—but declined it. And it was far from an insignificant proposal. The report states that Liverpool launched an aggressive pursuit and put financial terms on the table that no German club could come close to matching. Nevertheless, they hit a wall. Eichhorn has made his decision: money is not his priority at this stage of his career. His focus is on sporting development, and he believes remaining in the Bundesliga is the best path forward. That’s why he signed for Bayer Leverkusen.

Sky Sports adds that Leverkusen officials have held another round of intensive talks with the representatives of one of the most valuable 16-year-olds in world football. Several weeks ago, sporting director Simon Rolfes and director of professional football Kim Falkenberg personally traveled to Berlin to present the club's long-term project. Leverkusen also had a key advantage. The club recently hired Konstantinos Kotsifakis, formerly a youth coach at Hertha BSC and one of the people Eichhorn trusts most. A checkmate move by Leverkusen's management.

"After really very good talks, I decided on what I consider to be the best solution: Leverkusen is a club that has quickly developed many players, even very young ones, into top professionals" commented the Berlin native, who signed a long-term contract.

Previously, Bayern Munich had been considered the favorite to sign the 16-year-old midfielder. However, the club reportedly withdrew from the race after being stunned by a demand from the player's representatives—his parents and agent—for a 10 million euros signing bonus. That request was not well received by the German football public, but Eichhorn's latest decision has demonstrated that money is not his sole motivation, helping him regain the respect of many observers. This was Eichhorn's first season in senior football. He made 19 appearances in all competitions—17 in the 2. Bundesliga and two in the DFB-Pokal—and scored two goals.
