K'Ogalo coach Jonathan McKinstry has for the first time spoken on the fate of the two senior players
George "Blackberry" Odhiambo is not part of Gor Mahia future plans, while Gad Mathews is returning from a surgery and will soon resume training, tactician Jonathan McKinstry has clarified.
Mozzart Sport exclusively reported that Blackberry was leaving the club, yet, in a tweet the player disputed the story - saying that he still had two months left on his contract and was in talks with the management for a possible extension.
Clarifying the matter with a week to the start of the new season, Gor Mahia head coach Johnathan McKinstry affirmed that the seven-time Premier League winner is not part of his future plans.
"It's already known that he's not part of our long term plans," the Irishman was equivocal.
His exit puts to an end one of K'Ogalo's modern era legendary takes.
Blackberry has won seven league titles. Six with Gor Mahia and one with Tusker FC. He is the most successful Kenyan player in terms of league titles won.
He first joined Gor Mahia in 2009 and left in 2011 for short stints in Denmark and Tanzania respectively.
He rejoined the club in 2014 - playing under different coaches as he reinvented himself before again departing, this time to rivals Tusker in 2019.
After helping the Brewers to win the league, Odhiambo rejoined Gor in 2021 to a low key impact.
About Gad Mathews, who was at one point linked with a move away with Bandari FC mentioned as his next destination, McKinstry said that the goalkeeper has been nursing an injury.
"We expect him to resume training soon, probably next week."
In the absence of Gad who kept the most number of clean sheets last season in the league, Caleb Otieno was between the sticks as Gor Mahia won the Charity Shield against Kakamega Homeboyz on penalties.
