Fulham, Atalanta and Getafe in the Super League?
Reading Time: 4min | Tue. 20.04.21. | 11:09
Not really... But they should be, given the results of these clubs against the ones forming the new competition
Messi, Ronaldo, Mbappe, Haaland... Remember those names? None of them are in the forefront, filling out the headlines, in the last two days. It is all revolving around the European Super League and the explosion it caused.
And it is getting more and more interesting - football did not stop, regardless of the shock all European clubs are in. Let's put all the politics and finance aside just for a moment and take a look at the results members of the Super League made in the last couple of days.
We'll start with the Premier League. If we look at the results and the word "super" - Leeds United should for sure be the members of the ESL. They held the reigning English top-tier champions to a draw last night and beaten the ones soon to be champions (Liverpool and Manchester City). Alas, the Whites of Yorkshire do not have the budget to compete with the 'superior' clubs of Europe.
Similar can be said for the Cottagers of London, Fulham. The club is painfully close to relegation to Championship but what they showed against a Super League participant, Arsenal, should give Fulham the right to call themselves a 'super' club. Or at least to prove that Arsenal are not 'super' - Fulham had all three points in the bag until the last minute when a fortunate rebound-goal by Nketiah watered down the disappointing performance by the Gunners.
Who else is not 'super'? Tottenham. Jose Mourinho's ex-club managed to avoid defeat against Everton only due to pure luck and the skill of Harry Kane.
Yes, Manchester City and Arsenal are in the semi-finals of European competitions. But that does not take away from the clubs such as Slavia Prague or Porto, who are financially weaker but still managed to reach the last eight of the biggest tournaments in Europe.
Their performances this season (Porto 'kicked out' Juve from the Champions League and Slavia Prague is officially 35th on the UEFA club list and reached the final 8 of Europa League) - aren't those 'super'?
Different country, same question. Italian upper echelon - are they really that much better that they can call themselves 'super'? If you take a look at the scoreboard, not really... they just have more money. Much more.
Italian still-champions and the ones close to become the Serie A title holders, Juventus and Inter failed to prove their supremacy. Atalanta has beaten the Old Lady of Turin while Napoli held the Nerazzurri to a one-one stalemate. As an addition, AC Milan won thanks to an own goal from Genoa.
If these guys are 'super', Superman should consider a different hero name.
The Champions League masters, Real Madrid, with thirteen European titles to their name were lucky to have Thibaut Courtois against Getafe. The Belgian was the only superior 'thing' Los Blancos had against their neighbours, because if that wasn't the case - the club from the small town next to Madrid would have taken all three points.
Real Madrid president Florentino Perez believes that the new league will help even the smaller (poorer) clubs. It is a fact that clubs like Getafe could use a financial injection but as far as the dedication to the game and style of play go, Getafe taught Real a little lesson on Sunday.
Yes, Manchester United have beaten Burnley. Yes, Barcelona won the Copa del Rey. There is an obvious difference in quality between some clubs who are or aren't members of the Super League.
But there is more than enough material for the discussion to continue if the clubs that formed the new league really deserve a league of their own, created in such a greedy way.
Bayern and Dortmund allegedly rejected to participate. It is rumoured that PSG are hesitant due to TV rights contracts that limit the club owner from entering the new league smoothly.
Fans are furious and they have their reasons. Drastic changes and reforms happen every now and then. It is a mystery how everything will unravel but everyone is eager to see the next episode of this interesting show.
