Kenyan refereeing continues to make strides on the continental stage after four officials were selected to officiate at the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) set for December 2025 to January 2026 in Morocco.

Peter Kamaku Waweru has been named among the center referees, while Dickens Mimisa will serve as one of the Video Assistant Referees (VAR).
Kenya’s presence is further strengthened by assistant referees Gilbert Cheruiyot and Stephen Yiembe, both of whom have extensive international experience.
Before the tournament, all selected officials will attend a pre-tournament preparation course in Cairo, Egypt, from 8 to 13 November.
The training camp forms part of CAF’s high-level workshops designed to ensure referees are physically and technically ready for Africa’s biggest football event.

According to CAF, the list features 32 referees, 32 assistant referees, 4 VAR officials, and 6 technical and physical instructors, who will oversee the sessions.
The course will include physical, theoretical, and technical assessments, with a strong emphasis on the Laws of the Game, VAR protocols, and match management.
The Kenyan quartet joins an elite group of top African match officials, including Omar Artan (Somalia), Daniel Laryea (Ghana), Dahane Beida (Mauritania), Mustapha Ghorbal (Algeria), Abongile Tom (South Africa), Amin Omar (Egypt), and Issa Sy (Senegal), among others.
Waweru, one of Kenya’s most respected referees, is no stranger to the continental stage.
The FIFA-accredited official has previously handled AFCON matches, CAF Champions League ties, and World Cup qualifiers.
Mimisa, recently crowned Kenya’s 2024 Male Referee of the Year, has been lauded for his calm control and firm decision-making in high-pressure situations.
He has overseen some of the country’s biggest fixtures, including the Mashemeji Derby between Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards, and has also officiated at AFCON U20 tournaments.
Yiembe, from Nakuru, began his refereeing career in 2012 and earned his FIFA badge in 2018.
His resume includes appearances at AFCON, FIFA World Cup qualifiers, and the Olympic Games.
Notably, he served as second assistant referee in the CAF Champions League Final between Pyramids FC and Mamelodi Sundowns and was also part of the officiating team at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, where he took charge of the match between Real Madrid and Salzburg.
Cheruiyot is another familiar face on the African refereeing scene, has long been part of CAF’s trusted pool of officials for high-stakes matches across the continent.

36 assistant referees have also been added, and in the the video assistant referee (VAR) technology, 11 referees have been assigned to work in the video assistant referee (VAR) room
The list will be narrowed down based on the referees' performances and performance levels following theoretical and practical tests following the conclusion of the preparatory camp in Cairo.
