The speedy winger joined the FKF Premier League newcomers from AFC Leopards after spending a season at the Den, marking his return to the local scene following several years of playing abroad.
Ovella made his CAF Confederation Cup debut for Nairobi United last month against NEC FC in the return leg clash at Nyayo Stadium, helping the club seal progression to the next round on the away goal rule after a 3-3 aggregate draw. His league debut soon followed against Mara Sugar FC, where he scored the match-winning goal in a 1-0 victory.
Speaking in an interview, the former Harambee Stars winger expressed his delight at finally achieving his long-standing ambition of playing continental football.
“My dream was to play in the CAF competitions. We were not able to do that at AFC Leopards, but I am proud to be here because I get to play it this year. It was either that or another adventure abroad,” he told Pulse Sports.
Ovella also revealed that he was on the verge of sealing a move abroad after leaving Leopards, but the convincing project at Nairobi United persuaded him to stay and be part of the club’s ambitious journey.
“Everything at Nairobi United is perfect. The coaches and management are good. I wanted to leave the country, but there were things behind the scenes at AFC Leopards that forced the transfer not to go through,” he explained.
Nairobi United are now on the brink of history as they aim to reach the CAF Confederation Cup group stage. The club took a commanding 2-0 lead over Tunisia’s Etoile du Sahel in the second-round first leg at Ulinzi Sports Complex, and will travel to Tunis for the decisive return leg on Sunday.
Ovella remains confident that the team has what it takes to finish the job.
“We have a good squad. As much as this stage needs experience, if you are good, you are good. Some of the young players are learning a lot from me and asking questions, so I believe we have what it takes,” he said.
He added that the team’s faith, unity, and the support of their fans will be key to achieving their goals.
“It’s all about faith. It’s not going to be easy. Some of the players are young and have no international experience, but with the coaches we have and the fans pushing us, I am sure we will hit our targets.”
