Hutton does not believe Wanyama has much left in his tank to fit into Celtic's style of play.
Ex-Aston Villa defender Alan Hutton has poured cold water on the potential Victor Wanyama return to Celtic saying he does not believe that the midfielder can cope with the demands of the team.
Weeks ago, Wanyama announced that he would be leaving CF Montreal and has been linked with a host of clubs including the Scottish champions who are said to be keen on beefing up the defensive midfield position in January.
The former Harambee Stars captain is a cult hero at Celtic. He turned out for the club between 2011 and 2013 and is best remembered for the champions’ league against Barcelona. He has severally been linked with a return to the club and with his contract set to expire in December, reports on a possible return to Glasgow has been making rounds in the Scottish media.
Hutton, who played for Celtic’s rivals, Rangers and just like Wanyama turned out for Tottenham admits that the player could return to the Scottish champions.
“They might look at it. I am not so sure it would be top of the list. He has obviously got that history of being at the club. He has left and played at a high level,” he told Football Insider.
The former right-back is however not convinced with Wanyama’s potential return as he does not believe that the 31-year-old can cope with the demands of Celtic’s high press style of football.
“But at 31, they tried that with McCarthy, has that really worked? I am not so sure. There is obviously a top player within there but I think it really depends on who they have in their sights. They play with very high energy, high aggression, and non-stop. Can he do that week in and week out? I am not so sure.“.
