Football champagne! Magpies stun City in one of the best games of Premier League season

Reading Time: 3min | Sat. 22.11.25. | 22:35

A dozen chances, three goals, two controversial officiating decisions and a whole lot of drama at St. James' Park on Saturday night

Football, bloody football!

That could be the shortest and very emotional summary of what we have seen in the 90+something minutes at St. James' Park on Saturday night, as Newcastle United topped Manchester City 2-1 in one of the most exciting games of the Premier League season.

What a match, what a thrill, what a drama that was...

Straight from the kick off, both sides showed the desire to grab a win, but a handful of incredible misses - including some notable sitters - prevented us from a genuine firework in the opening 45 minutes.

Nick Woltemade was extremely inspired against Pep Guardiola's men, but the two first-half chances wasted were accompanied by an even better opportunity he failed to convert after the break. Gigio Donnarumma was truly incredible between the sticks, but he was also fortunate when Harvey Barnes missed a sitter following Jacob Murphy's cross.

At that point, the Geordies must have had various scenarios going through their mind, probably expecting some punishment on the other end. Alas, not even Erling Haaland could turn it into reality. The Norwegian had an excellent chance to score from a close range, but his effort ended on Nick Pope's chest.

Pep and his assistants were furious shortly after the referee decided not to award the visitors a penalty following contact between Schar and Foden. The heat was definitely on at that point, but neither team was able to break the deadlock.

That was the setup before the break, which served as a calm before the second-half storm, which literally erupted between the 63rd and the 70th minute - embellished with as many as three goals! Or as the Magpies would probably call it - Harvey Barnes' time.

He did miss a first-half sitter, but made it up for it sensationally. First, he opened the scoring after a lovely one-two with Bruno Guimaraes. Barnes' finishing was powerful and the ball went straight into the bottom corner, 1-0!

The visitors responded almost instantly through none other than Ruben Dias, who squeezed it somehow through the legs of Fabian Schar.

But that one was put to sleep in no time - Barnes was immaculate again, and on target to make it 2-1 the very next minute. The long VAR review followed, but the goal stood and the Magpies could celebrate their maiden EPL victory over the Cityzens after seven long, too long years.
