The team has been operating as Malindi Progressive Footballl Academy since promotion to the third tier in 2021-2022 season
Football Kenya Federation Division One side Malindi Progressive have successfully changed their name to Malindi United Football Club, Chairman, Rashid Odhiambo has confirmed.
The name change was put in place on Monday October 4th,2023 by FKF Leagues and competition committee in an email sent to all third teams.
"We refer to the above-subject matter and wish to bring to your attention that Malindi Progressive FC have applied for a change of name to Malindi United FC, the same has been approved," read part of the FKF statement.
Consequently, the club's base has shifted to Progressive Kagombani, Malindi from the current home turf Malindi High School Grounds.
Speaking to Mozzart Sport, the club owner Rashid noted that the name switch was necessary as they wanted to give the club a different identity signifying a fresh start for them.
"We agreed to swap names after a lengthy discussion with our stakeholders who are pretty comfortable with the idea. This is meant to give us a new dimension as a club as we forge towards meeting our season targets," he said.
He however, noted that, the name switch was not attributed to any sponsorship dealing as they are still looking for possible partnership as he feels overwhelmed by the cost of running the team.
The football administrator further revealed that major managerial changes are expected at the club which is seeking elevation to the second tier this term.
Former Bandari tactician Martin Mwandawiro will be tasked with steering the team's wheels assisted by former Mombasa Elites top man Kassim Wilson.
"We have a dream of playing in the NSL therefore, a couple of changes are going to be made in our technical bench to help us achieve the target," he added.
Malindi advanced to the third tier in the 2021-2022 campaign but has since struggled to cope in what is termed as the most physical league in the country.
Under the tutelage of Mwandawiro, United played out a barren stalemate in the league opener against Dandora Youth over the weekend.
Next for the Coastal team is a huge test against Kibera Soccer at the NCC Dagoretti Grounds.
