EPL Deadline Day recap: Isak's move overshadows everything, Villa could be ultimate D-Day winner

Reading Time: 5min | Tue. 02.09.25. | 11:51

The Manchester giants brought in new custodians, while London sides Chelsea, Arsenal, and Tottenham signed one player each

One of the most exceptional transfer window ever is over, and its Deadline Day couldn't have been any different, as we witnessed some bombastic last-minute transfers, after which nothing would be the same.

As usual, the Premier League sides were most active throughout, especially yesterday, while Liverpool completed the most lavish transfer window in Premier League history, spending around €490 million in total!

But let's start from the beginning...

Isak's shadow, the war Newcastle could win by no means, and Guehi's case as Liverpool's "memento mori"

It's safe to say that Alexander Isak's move from Newcastle to Liverpool overshadowed all the transfers, not only on Deadline Day, but perhaps throughout the entire transfer window. After the whole dramatic saga, Newcastle's hesitation and stubbornness, the Swede has become Liverpool's new #9.

Truth be told, Isak risked it all, as the Magpies could have persisted in their stance not to let the striker go, which would introduce the player to a dilemma: apologize and play or spend the season out of the squad.

Still, in the end, everything's just good business, and Newcastle's management understood it. After all, there's nothing worse than a "bad marriage," and the one between the Magpies and Isak would have been terrible after the entire drama.

Hence, they earned a lavish amount from the 25-year-old's transfer and invested it pretty well, keeping their hard feelings for themselves (unlike their fans).

However, not everything was perfect for Liverpool yesterday. The Latins had a saying, "Memento mori," which practically means that everyone should remember that they are mortal and by no means all-mighty. The Reds realized that, thanks to Marc Guehi's case.

When you spend almost half a million euros in a single transfer window, bring such fantastic players, and crown everything with Isak, you may think your power is unlimited. Liverpool may have felt that, but it didn't last long.

Even though everything was ready for the unveiling of Crystal Palace captain Guehi, the defender's move to Anfield fell through at the last possible moment because the Eagles failed to acquire his replacement.

In the end, the Englishman may be the biggest loser of Deadline Day in England, but his stay in London might be much more important than he could imagine, because... Memento mori.

Manchester giants get new #1s, the Big Six London sides sign one player each

Man City have a new custodian! Is it deja vu? You're probably wondering. They signed James Trafford a month ago. Well, the young Englishman shouldn't expect much playing time, as one of the best keepers in the world, Gianluigi Donnarumma, became the new Cityzen!

At the same time, a symbol of one era at Etihad, Ederson, left the club after eight years and joined Turkish Fenerbahce. Apart from the Brazilian, Manuel Akanji also said his farewells, moving to Inter Milan on loan.

Nevertheless, City wasn't the only side to bring a goalkeeper, as Man United did the same yesterday. The club's management and Ruben Amorim finally realized that they can by no means rely on Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir, and after negotiating with two keepers simultaneously, they opted for the younger one.

Despite his wish to join the Red Devils, Emiliano Martinez will stay at Aston Villa, as the 23-year-old Belgian Senne Lammens became the new Man United #1.

However, perhaps even more essential task for United was getting rid of some unwanted players. Therefore, Rasmus Hojlund and Antony joined Napoli and Real Betis, respectively, to the fans' delight.

The remaining Big Six sides weren't too active in terms of arrivals. Chelsea signed Facundo Buonanotte from Brighton, sent Ben Chilwell to their partner club Strasbourg, and loaned Nicolas Jackson to Bayern Munich after a three-day saga.

Tyrique George was also on the verge of leaving Stamford Bridge and joining Fulham, but the deal fell through because the Cottagers didn't meet the deadline.

Arsenal unveiled Piero Hincapie and sold Oleksandr Zinchenko to Nottingham Forest, while their fiercest rivals, Tottenham, activated another bomb. After Xavi Simons a few days ago, Spurs brought Randal Kolo Muani from Paris Saint-Germain on a season-long loan.

Aston Villa as the Deadline Day winner and Africans on the move

Yes, Liverpool brought Alexander Isak, but did you see Aston Villa's Deadline Day acquisitions? It can hardly get better than what the Villans did.

From now on, Unai Emery's squad will be stronger for Jadon Sancho, who'll try to revive his career once again, the experienced Victor Lindelof, who joined the Birmingham side as a free agent, and one of Liverpool's biggest talents, Harvey Elliott!

Most importantly for the Villans, Elliott's loan deal includes a mandatory buyout option, meaning that he'll permanently become their player next June. On the other hand, Villa will consider keeping Sancho only if he manages to wake up.

Fulham lost Chelsea's George, but secured two massive reinforcements: talented Brazilian Kevin from Shakhtar Donetsk and AC Milan's Samuel Chukwueze.

Still, the ex-Rossoneri forward isn't the only Nigerian who arrived in England's top tier on the Deadline Day. Wolverhampton strengthened the African presence in their squad by signing the Super Eagles' net-buster Tolo Arokodare from the Belgian side Genk, while Crystal Palace brought Christantus Uche from Getafe, as a replacement for Odsonne Edouard, who joined the French Lens.

Finally, Isak's move triggered Yoane Wissa's arrival at St. James' Park. Although Brentford refused to respect their deal with the striker and let him go, the pressure the Congolese put on the Bees was beneficial, so Wissa and Nick Woltemade will be the new attacking duo of Eddie Howe's crew.
