Two major goalkeeper transfers this summer

For most of the summer, it was clear that Gianluigi Donnarumma would be leaving Paris Saint-Germain, dissatisfied with his status at the club following Luis Enrique’s decision to bring in Lucas Chevalier from Lille.

Today, we are set to receive the official confirmation. As has been announced from day one, the outstanding Italian goalkeeper is moving to Manchester City. Medical tests are scheduled for the afternoon of the final day of the transfer window, after which a multi-year contract is expected to be signed, according to English and French media.

The agreement between Donnarumma and Manchester City (read: Pep Guardiola) had long been reached, but the clubs were waiting to finalize terms. Reports indicate that PSG will receive around 35 milion euros from the Italian’s transfer, though it remains to be seen whether this is entirely fixed or if 5 milion euros will come through bonuses.

A key point for the Citizens is that they will have enough time to register Donnarumma for the Champions League, as the player registration deadline for all three UEFA competitions expires at midnight on Tuesday.

Although long anticipated, this transfer was delayed due to the situation with Ederson. The Brazilian has been the irreplaceable figure between the posts at City for years, but at the start of this season, young James Trafford, signed for over 30 milion euros from Burnley, was given the first-choice role.

He struggled somewhat, perhaps under the pressure of knowing Donnarumma’s arrival was imminent, but bringing in the Italian also signaled the imminent departure of 32-year-old Ederson.

The Brazilian has been linked with Fenerbahce for a month, where goalkeeping duties alternate between Dominik Livakovic and Irfan Can Egribayat. His transfer fee will be around 13–14 million euros, but it won’t be the last deal the Istanbul giants make this summer.

In attempts to challenge Galatasaray, Fenerbahce has spent heavily in recent years. The project under Jose Mourinho, however, failed, and the Portuguese coach was recently dismissed. Roger Schmidt is expected to take over, and alongside Ederson in goal, he may also bring in a big name for the attack.

That player is Marco Asensio, whom Aston Villa wanted to keep after his loan spell in the latter half of last season, but Fenerbahce made a stronger move and reached an agreement with PSG to purchase the experienced attacking midfielder. In his case as well, the reported fee is 14 milion euros.
