He was in charge of the Pharaos for only six months, but the AFCON 2021 final loss accompanied by the Qatar playoffs exit took its toll

Portuguese boss Carlos Queiroz has left his role as the coach of Egypt after six months in charge. Although he announced his soon departure back in March, it was not officially confirmed until Monday night.

In September, he took over from Hossam El Badry ahead of the AFCON 2021 and the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers playoffs.

The 69-year-old, however, failed to deliver the expected results due to two excruciating defeats against the same rival, Senegal.

His reign with Egypt appeared to have begun brightly, with his team reaching the final of the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon. Eventually, they lost on penalties to the Lions of Teranga after a 1-1 draw.

Then, in March's World Cup qualifying playoff against the same opposition, Egypt lost on penalties once more, with star player Mohamed Salah among those who missed.

Confirming his departure, Quieroz wrote on Twitter:

"To all the Egyptian fans, our supporters, my friendly and magical staff dream team and to my wonderful players.

"Every new beginning that starts with one painful farewell means that our hearts are full of gratitude, respect, and friendship. Those are my feelings right now."
