APS Bomet head coach Sammy 'Pamzo' Omollo has insisted he will not abandon his philosophy of building from the back despite a costly error that contributed to his side’s 2-1 defeat to league leaders Gor Mahia.

The league debutants were punished early in Sunday’s FKF Premier League clash after a failed attempt to play out from the back led to the opening goal.

Goalkeeper Maxwell Mulili attempted a short pass to defender Maxwell Kubasu, who was dispossessed under pressure, allowing Ebenezer Assifuah to score in the sixth minute.

Jackson Dwang doubled Gor Mahia’s lead in the second half before Hansel Ochieng pulled one back late on to set up a tense finish.

Despite the error proving decisive, Pamzo remained firm in his tactical approach.

“We will continue building play from the back, since we have been doing this in other matches and it has been paying off so well.

It’s only that we played against a very experienced side who took advantage of our single mistake and capitalised on it.

We tried everything possible, especially with the substitutions I made, but unfortunately, it did not work,” he said.

The former Kenya international defended his team’s overall display, arguing that the performance justified sticking to their style.

“I was impressed with how the boys played, especially when building the game from the back. It’s only that during the build-up, we made a mistake that allowed Gor Mahia to score.

We’ve had a tendency to concede early, which makes it difficult to recover. When you lose to Gor Mahia, and you play well, I think you just have to be proud of yourself.”

APS Bomet remain just above the relegation zone with 18 points, separated by a superior goal difference to Kariobangi Sharks, but Pamzo expressed confidence in his survival plan.

“For us to ensure we remain in the Premier League, we have to beat teams below us and those slightly above us. We have to take three points from them. The foundation is there, and everything is working.

We are comfortable on the ball. We are only going to work on defending because that is where we need slight adjustments,” he added.

Next up for APS is the Law Enforcers derby against Kenya Police FC on Sunday, another crucial fixture in their fight to retain top-flight status in the FKF Premier League.
