Once a fringe player at Rainbow FC, Ombima has transformed into a key figure at Darajani Gogo

Darajani Gogo’s talisman Veron Ombima hopes to earn a spot in Harambee Stars' provisional squad for the African Nations Championship (CHAN), banking on his impressive form in the National Super League (NSL).

Ombima has been a standout performer for Gogo this season, netting nine goals and assisting three more.

His current tally surpasses last season’s eight goals, which he managed after joining the club in the mid-season transfer window.

"I believe I’m ready for the national team, but it’s a stepping stone. I still have a lot of work to do to turn this dream into reality," he told Mozzart Sport.

The Harambee Stars are currently competing in the Mapinduzi Cup in Zanzibar, with preparations for CHAN set to begin immediately after the tournament.

Interim head coach Francis Kimanzi has pledged to scout talent from lower-tier leagues as part of his strategy for the continental competition.

"In modern football, numbers speak loudly. If the coaches consider my stats, I believe I have a real shot at pursuing my dream," Ombima added.

Once a fringe player at Rainbow FC, Ombima has transformed into a key figure at Darajani Gogo.

After being released by Rainbow in January 2024, he has aided Gogo to third place in the NSL standings and clinched the league’s December Player of the Month award.

What sparked this remarkable turnaround?

"Coach Paul Ogai gave me hope and promised to help me become a better player.

He has played a pivotal role in my progress. When I was at my lowest, he believed in me, and I’m glad to repay that trust," said Ombima.

He also credited Gogo’s strategic recruitment during the off-season. "The addition of experienced players like Brian Wepo has elevated my game significantly," he noted.

Coach Ogai praised Ombima for his resilience and determination, emphasizing his value to the team.

"Ombima has grown tremendously. His goal-scoring is evident, his positioning has improved, and he’s always willing to fight for the team. He’s the kind of player who thrives with trust and patience," Ogai remarked.

Ombima will have another opportunity to extend his goal tally when Gogo faces Michael Olunga Football Academy (MOFA) next weekend in Homa Bay.
