The former AFC Leopards defender joined Charlton in January from Serbian SuperLiga club Vojvodina to become only the second Kenyan-born player, after Harambee Stars winger Ayub Timbe, to sign for an English Championship club.

Since joining the club, Kenyans have shown great support for the 22-year-old, storming Charlton's social media pages and even taunting the club when he sat on the bench for the first two matches.

The support was magnified when he was named in the starting line-up for Charlton's match against Southampton and announced himself to the Addicks fan-base when he produced a Man-of-the-Match performance in their 1-1 draw.

Speaking to Charlton Live after the match, the former PAOK B defender expressed his gratitude to his countrymen.

“Yeah, it is massive support from my Kenyan people and, of course, at the end of the day, it is my career, and I have to make myself proud despite everything going on.

So, for me, I just keep my head down and try to improve every day and, yeah, the results will speak for themselves,” said Sichenje.

The Kakamega High School alumnus went ahead to reveal his close connection with the Kenyan fan base and the obligation to repay them with a strong performance.

“Yeah, it is massive. Even when I play in the Kenya national team, they always support me. So, it is something I do not take for granted because they show me love. So, I always represent them well and try to improve in everything I do,” he added.

Sichenje played 90 minutes before being substituted in stoppage time as they claimed an important point against Victor Wanyama’s former club.

With the draw, Charlton are now 17th in the 24-team league table with 40 points, seven points more than Leicester City, who occupy the final relegation slot.
