Mathare United FC looks like a slowly sinking ship right now. That is if the 2020/2021 Football Kenya Federation Premier League standings is anything to go by.

After yesterday’s 2-1 comeback defeat against title hopefuls KCB, the Slum Boys’ miseries were further compounded as the team remained rooted at the bottom of the log, five points from the nearest safety place.

After the hard-fought narrow win over Mathare, KCB’s duo of head coach Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno and forward Derrick Otanga, who scored the all-important goal, were however quick to point out how much of a battle getting the win was.

“If that is the last team in the league playing like that, what do you expect from teams in the top four?” the head coach posed afterwards.

“We did not expect the game to be as tough as it was. Especially when they scored there was tension amongst us,” the striker revealed said.

Despite a torrid run of form that has seen Mathare collect only one win in the fifteen games they have played this season, experienced centre back David ‘Cheche’ Ochieng’, who was named the captain of the day, revealed that the results did not in any way reflect the team’s resolve on the field and has backed his side to continue putting up a fight just the way they did in their first game under new head coach Frank Ouna.

“To anyone who watched the full game, I believe they saw a different attitude and a different fighting spirit. So if we continue building from that, there are games that we will be lucky, and hopefully, the more we fight, the more we will score goals,” the centre back told Mozzart Sport.

Mathare next travels all the way to Bungoma to take on Nzoia Sugar on Sunday.
