Chaos in France – Le Havre survive in 99th minute, Lyon into Europe!

A penalty goal gave Le Havre survival, sent Reims to the relegation play-off, and pushed Lyon into Europe

It wasn't just the German league that concluded today. This evening also marked the final round of France’s Ligue 1. Just like with the Bundesliga, the champion had already been decided well in advance. PSG proved once again to be the undisputed ruler of French football. Tonight, the spotlight was on the battle between teams fighting for spots in one of the three European competitions.

Before the matches began, the Ligue 1 standings below PSG included the following teams in order: Marseille, Monaco, Nice, Lille, Strasbourg, and Lyon. Out of those six teams, Marseille and Monaco had already secured direct qualification for the top-tier European competition, while the remaining four were fighting for one of the three remaining European slots.

Lyon did everything they could on their end. They won their home match against Angers 2-0, with Lacazette scoring in the 55th and 72nd minutes. But it wasn’t enough to secure a European spot. Lyon needed one of the teams ahead of them to slip up – and that’s exactly what happened. It all seemed like Strasbourg would draw 2-2 with Le Havre, but everything changed in the 99th minute when the visiting team was awarded a penalty, securing their survival and pushing Strasbourg out of reach of European competition.

Nice was already out of reach for Lyon. And it was Nice that showed no mercy against Brest, putting five goals past them to secure a place in the Champions League qualifiers.

Lille was the one team that absolutely couldn’t afford to lose in the match against Reims, but in the end, they managed to not only avoid defeat but actually secure a win, thus guaranteeing themselves a spot in the Europa League group stage.

In the end, it's worth mentioning that PSG came from behind to secure a 3-1 victory against Auxerre.
