Liverpool is having a dream season. Not only the Reds are playing fantastic under first-year coach Arne Slot, but the other title contenders are not performing well and they are making it easier for Liverpool. On the other hand, Mohamed Salah is having a career season in a year when he said that he probably won‘t sign a new contract with the club. Against Manchester City he scored a goal and added another assist in a 2-0, bringing his tally to 25 and 16 assists. The Egyptian forwards is certainly already putting his name right up there for Ballon d‘Or nomination. But according to Jamie Carragher, he won‘t win it as he hasn‘t (and will not) win a major tournament. And he is not counting AFCON.

Speaking with his fellow TV pundits Daniel Sturridge and Micah Richards, former Liverpool defender wanted to give reasons while Salah will be in contention for the award in 2025, but probably won‘t get it. His reasoning is that most players who got it in previous years were either great in the Champions League or in the major tournaments. So, he totally ignored AFCON as a ‘major tournament‘ since he didn‘t anticipate the fact that Salah could win the biggest African competition with Egypt.

“I think the problem is the fact he's with Egypt, and he's probably not playing in the major tournament as such, or maybe got a great chance of winning, I think it's either the Champions League or the major tournament. Normally, the player who excels in that, like Vini Jr and Kylian Mbappe right now, Real Madrid looking really good going for the Champions League. Liverpool will be in that conversation, but right now Los Blancos are certainly the front runner“ said former Liverpool defender.

Both Sturridge and Richards were quick to correct Carragher, with Richards stating:

“Just to say, AFCON is a major tournament because a lot of people are at home saying "they aren't taking it serious". AFCON is a big tournament, just so you know“. Carragher asked him whether Egypt would be in contention to win the World Cup next year, to which the former Man City defender responded: “No, but AFCON is big, isn't it? You remember when him and Mane was going for it? 'It's a fact. It's a fact. It's a fact. If you win the Euros or Copa America it's deemed to be big so the AFCON is in the same level“ said Richards.
