Kenya is set to face the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON)-bound Equatorial Guinea and Senegal in friendlies on 14 November and 18 November, respectively, in Turkey.

Senegal, in particular, ranks way better than Kenya in the FIFA rankings, sitting at position 18 globally, and Equatorial Guinea at 99, while Kenya sits in position 109.

Speaking to the press on the sidelines of the Harambee Stars training session on Tuesday, 11 November, Omondi assessed the upcoming encounter with the 2021 AFCON champions.

It is a big challenge, especially playing a team like Senegal, who are a big team in the world, and so this will really help us as we prepare for the 2027 AFCON,” said Omondi.

The current Harambee Stars squad has seen several players receive their maiden call-ups, as well as others returning after a long time.

Omondi shared how the team is adapting to the new mix.

The mood is great because there are new players who have gotten their first call-ups, and so those of us who have been around for a while welcome them so that they can settle fast for our upcoming assignment,” said Omondi.

The former Bandari shot stopper is currently one of the key players in the national team and has also taken time to reflect on his journey to the national team, where he has been impressive, especially in the recently concluded 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

It feels great. It had always been a dream to play for the national team, and since I got the opportunity, I have been working hard to keep it and remain in the fold to represent my country,” he stated.

For his troubles last season, the former Mathare United goalkeeper earned a move to Kenyan giants Gor Mahia during the off-season and shared his experience so far.

It is a big team. Every game is a must-win, and the competition for places is so high. I have Gad (Mathews) and Saha (Kevin Omondi), who push each other.”
