While the hosts are pushing to re-establish themselves in the top half, the visitors arrive desperate for points as they continue their battle for survival.
The Stadium of Light has been a fortress for Sunderland this season, and it remains a key factor as Regis Le Bris’ side looks to bounce back from a frustrating 3-1 defeat away to West Ham United last weekend.
That loss extended a run of inconsistent league form, with the Black Cats winning just once in their last six Premier League matches.
However, that solitary win came at home, where they edged Crystal Palace 2-1, underlining the contrast between their home and away performances.
Despite recent stutters, Sunderland sit 11th in the table with 33 points from 23 games, comfortably clear of the relegation zone and still within touching distance of the European places.
Defensively, they remain one of the more solid sides outside the top five, conceding just 26 league goals so far.
Across their last five league matches, Sunderland have scored four goals and conceded eight, with four of those games seeing both teams find the net.
At home, they are yet to lose in the Premier League this season, winning six and drawing five. They have failed to score in just one league game at the Stadium of Light.
Team news, however, presents a challenge for the hosts.
Midfield lynchpin Granit Xhaka remains sidelined with an ankle injury and is expected to miss several more weeks, while Bertrand Traore and Jocelyn Ta Bi are also unavailable.
Le Bris may look to add more stability in midfield, with Habib Diarra expected to feature more prominently.
In attack, Brian Brobbey has emerged as the key threat, scoring three times in his last four league appearances, while Nordi Mukiele continues to contribute creatively from wide areas.
Burnley arrive on Wearside sitting 19th in the standings with just 15 points from 23 matches, and although they cannot change their league position this weekend, signs of resilience have begun to emerge.
Scott Parker’s side are winless in their last 14 Premier League games, but they are unbeaten in four across all competitions.
They have drawn each of their last three league matches, including a 2-2 stalemate against Tottenham Hotspur last time out.
In that match, Burnley again showed both their attacking potential and defensive fragility.
Over their last five league games, the Clarets have scored six goals and conceded ten, with four of those fixtures ending with both teams scoring.
Away from home, however, their struggles are clear: Burnley have taken just five points from 11 away league matches, winning once and failing to keep a single clean sheet on their travels this season.
Parker has received a boost with Zian Flemming and Joe Worrall returning to contention, though several key players remain sidelined, including Josh Cullen, Connor Roberts and Jordan Beyer.
Lyle Foster could start after scoring off the bench last weekend, while James Ward-Prowse may feature as he builds match fitness following his recent loan move, offering a set-piece threat that could prove decisive.
Historically, this fixture has been tight.
Burnley won the reverse meeting 2-0 earlier this season, but they have managed just one win in their last 12 visits to the Stadium of Light.
Recent head-to-head meetings have been low-scoring, though current form suggests a more open contest this time around.
Key betting points;
Sunderland have seen both teams score in four of their last five matches.
The Black Cats have scored in 10 of their 11 home league games this season.
Each of Burnley’s last four league matches has ended with both teams scoring.
Burnley have conceded two or more goals in nine of their 11 away league fixtures.
With Sunderland’s strong home record and Burnley’s improved attacking output but ongoing defensive issues, goals at both ends look likely. While the hosts should control large spells, the Clarets have shown enough resilience to contribute on the scoresheet.
Prediction; Both Teams to Score (BTTS)
