Both teams were held to draws in matches they were widely expected to win, and with the table tight at the top, there is little room for dropped points.
This fixture comes at a decisive time: Milan seeks to reassert title credentials, while Atalanta aim to convert strong performances into tangible results.
Atalanta have become Serie A’s draw specialists this season.
Despite a positive eight-game unbeaten run in the league, six of those fixtures have ended level, including their most recent 1-1 draw away to Cremonese.
While going unbeaten across the opening phase is commendable - and represents only their second such start in fifteen seasons - the excessive draws have prevented them from meaningfully pushing up the standings.
Their performances have generally been controlled and tactically coherent, but the lack of cutting edge in the final third remains a persistent theme.
The home record has also been concerning.
Atalanta have won just three of their last fifteen league games in Bergamo (D8, L4), a sharp contrast to the fortress-like character of the Gewiss Stadium in previous years.
Goals have come in inconsistent spells, with leading forwards Gianluca Scamacca and Nikola Krstovic yet to find sustained form, while Ademola Lookman’s reintegration gives the side more dynamism but remains a work in progress.
AC Milan, meanwhile, come into this clash, having lost their place at the top of the table after a surprising 2-2 draw at home to Pisa.
Despite dominating stretches of the game, defensive lapses and a lack of early attacking sharpness forced them to rely on a spectacular injury-time equalizer to salvage a point.
Even so, Milan’s general trajectory remains positive.
The Rossoneri have an eight-match unbeaten run in all competitions (W6, D2) since their shock opening-day defeat to Cremonese and have looked notably fresher and more structured this season thanks to the absence of European commitments.
Away from home, Milan have been particularly disciplined.
They remain undefeated on the road (W2, D1) and have kept three straight clean sheets as the away team.
However, there is a statistical note of caution: Milan have been held scoreless in four of their last five Serie A matches played on a Tuesday,
This matchup has swung in Atalanta’s favor recently, with La Dea unbeaten in the last five meetings (W4, D1).
Their aggressive pressing style and fluid rotations between the lines have historically troubled Milan.
However, Milan now appear defensively tighter and more structured, responding well in games requiring resilience and controlled tempo.
On the touchline, this is also a meeting of tactical philosophies. Ivan Jurić, seeking to impose a pressing-centric and vertical transition style, has created a resilient Atalanta side that concedes few but also struggles to break compact opponents.
Meanwhile, Massimiliano Allegri has rebuilt Milan around stability and measured progression rather than explosive attacking play.
This match will likely hinge on tempo control.
If Atalanta are allowed to sustain pressure, especially through rotations involving the likes of Charles De Ketelaere drifting into pockets, Milan could find themselves adding defensive numbers deeper than intended.
Milan, on the other hand, will aim to strike in calculated waves, particularly through Rafael Leão’s explosiveness in wide channels and Samuel Ricci’s or Luca Modric’s progressive passing from midfield.
These trends point toward a cagey first half before intensity escalates, particularly between minutes 60 and 90.
Atalanta will look closely at De Ketelaere, who spent a difficult spell at Milan but is now revitalized in Bergamo.
He has scored braces in four of his last five scoring appearances and notably opened the scoring in this fixture last season.
He represents the creative link Atalanta have been missing in previous campaigns.
Milan’s forward line continues to rely heavily on Rafael Leão, who has scored three times in his last two matches.
However, the Rossoneri remain without Christian Pulisic, the team’s top scorer this season.
Santiago Giménez is yet to score his first league goal this campaign, and while his finishing usually improves later in matches, his place in the starting XI could be under review.
In terms of squad availability, Atalanta are nearly full strength aside from Mitchel Bakker and Giorgio Scalvini.
Milan remain without Pulisic, Adrien Rabiot, Ardon Jashari, Pervis Estupiñán, and Ruben Loftus-Cheek, although the latter could feature from the bench.

Atalanta are unbeaten in their last five head-to-head meetings with AC Milan.
Milan have dropped points recently, drawing two of their last three Serie A matches.
Atalanta have conceded exactly one goal in six of their eight league fixtures this season.
Milan tend to concede late, with five of their six league goals conceded coming after half-time.
AC Milan hasn't managed a win against Atalanta in their last five meetings, losing four.
They will be keen on ending that poor run here, but they will be meeting an equally formidable side.
Atalanta have not tasted defeat so far this season in the league but has drawn six of the eight outings.
Each of their last four matches ended in draws, and AC Milan is also coming from a second draw in three matches. For both sides, this will be a tough game.
