The Portuguese manager took over the hot seat at Old Trafford back in November 2024 following the departure of Dutch tactician Erik ten Hag.

McCarthy, on the other hand, is a former Manchester United forward's coach, a position he held for two years from July 2022, after which he chose not to renew his deal.

Speaking to Sky Sports, McCarthy threw his weight behind Amorim, noting the prowess of the 40-year-old.

“He is a part of the best out of this new generation (of managers) that is just coming out after what he has achieved at Sporting Lisbon.

I think if they give him time, if they give him what he wants, he can bring in the players he wants to bring,” said McCarthy.

The Bafana Bafana all-time top scorer also took time to highlight the difference between Amorim’s time and that of legendary former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

“There are no easy games, so you can't guarantee that he will win like in the past when United had a golden era when Fergie (Ferguson) was in charge and teams looked a little bit easy and United had a solid team that knew what winning was about,” he added.

Ferguson is the Premier League's longest serving manager in history, having served the club for 26 years, between 1986 and 2013 and overseeing what is largely dubbed as Manchester United’s golden era.

During his time with the club, the retired Scottish tactician won 38 major titles, including two UEFA Champions League trophies, 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cups and four League Cups.

Amorim, on the other hand, is a budding tactician who has already made a name for himself, including winning two Portuguese titles with Sporting Lisbon.

With his appointment in 2024, Amorim became the club’s youngest manager in over 50 years and is currently charged with ending United’s 13-year wait for the league title.

United are currently 11th on the EPL standings and emerged 2-1 victors in their last league match against Chelsea.
