Bad, worse, Milan: Atalanta push Rossoneri away from Champions League

La Dea had a five-game-long winless streak, but they put an end to it at San Siro (2-3)

It's a tough time to be a Rossoneri fan.

Once giants - AC Milan - are in the middle of a painful, severe crisis that erupted on Sunday night, as they lost at their own ground, the mythical San Siro, to Atalanta.

Losing 3-2 means the Rossoneri are now at real risk of missing out on Champions League football next season.

Right now, they're in fifth place with 47 points, the same as Roma, but Roma have a better goal difference. Como are closing in too, so it wouldn't be surprising if the Rossoneri end up in the Europa League instead of the Champions League in a few months.

All of this is happening while Milan’s most passionate fans are clashing with the club's board. This tension affected attendance at tonight's game and likely played a role in the painful defeat.

Meanwhile, Atalanta finally had something to celebrate, ending their five-game winless streak. Their strong first-half performance gave them a lead that proved crucial. Ederson and Zappacosta put them 2-0 up, keeping the Bergamo side in the race for a spot in the Europa League or Conference League.

After Raspadori scored a brilliant goal just after the break, it looked like Milan were headed for a heavy defeat. Despite the tough atmosphere and their own fans booing - Rafael Leao heard it as he left the pitch - the Rossoneri managed to regroup near the end and almost pulled off an incredible comeback.

Strahinja Pavlovic scored with a header in the 88th minute, and then Nkunku closed the gap from the spot to just one goal during stoppage time. Fullkrug had a chance to make it 3-3 in the final seconds, but his header missed the left post by just a few inches.

The last few games of the Serie A season will decide everything. Still, Milan are just a shadow of what they once were, and it must be tough for their fans to watch this decline, which could also hurt the club financially in the coming months.
