The boys’ side, under coach Leonard Odipo, faced hosts Uganda in the first match at 3 PM, just hours after arriving in Uganda following a gruelling 13-hour bus trip to Kampala from Nairobi.

The lack of preparation showed, as Kenya was whitewashed 7-0, a humbling start that highlighted the challenges of last-minute arrangements.

Barely an hour later, Kenya regrouped for their second tie against Burundi.

The side displayed resilience and determination, creating opportunities and showcasing glimpses of their potential as they came close to bagging their first point in the tourney.

However, their efforts fell short as Burundi struck twice after Kenya had initially taken a 1-0 lead, handing the junior side a 2-1 loss in their second match of the day.

These results placed Kenya at the bottom of the five-team Group A, which also features Djibouti, South Sudan, and Rwanda.

Looking ahead, Kenya will aim to recover against Djibouti on Sunday, 7 December, in a bid to secure their first win of the tournament.

The U15 women’s team had a solitary fixture, taking on Rwanda following the men’s demoralising defeat to Uganda.

The young ladies displayed courage and composure, holding their opponents to a 0-0 draw, earning a hard-fought point and demonstrating that with proper preparation, the side can compete strongly at this level.

The opening day outcomes for both sides were overshadowed by logistical and preparatory shortcomings as the teams were hurriedly assembled before being flagged off to represent the nation in Uganda.

Both contingents were grouped without adequate in-house preparation, arrived just hours before kickoff, and were forced to honour matches despite the Football Kenya Federation’s (FKF) request to reschedule the games, seeing Kenya perform below par on the opening day of the tournament.
