The FKF Premier League debutants have struggled without a designated home ground after the Bomet IAAF Stadium, their fortress during last season’s promotion campaign, was closed for renovation.

They initially hosted one match at Gusii Stadium before settling for Kericho Green Stadium, which offered proximity to their fan base.

However, playing away from their traditional support and on substandard surfaces appears to have taken a toll on their performance.

Football experts argue that poor playing conditions significantly affect a team’s rhythm, confidence, and overall output.

Relief may be on the way, according to insiders who spoke to Mozzart Sport during Wednesday’s pre-unveiling of the club’s KSh 11 million sponsorship package from Mozzart Bet Kenya Limited.

APS Bomet may soon shift some home games to Nairobi, but only on one condition.

The players were challenged to prove their worth in their upcoming weekend fixture against Sofapaka at Dandora Stadium.

A win could trigger steps towards securing Nairobi as a temporary home base while renovations continue in Bomet.

Bishop Fred Akama, who leads the club’s management, delivered the message in a candid address to the squad.

I hear you’ve been playing on poor fields. Maybe it’s bad maintenance; maybe the pitches resemble rice fields,” he said.

Now, if you win on Saturday, we will start holding some of our home games here in Nairobi. But first, we need to prove that the win against Gor Mahia was not a fluke. We will explore ways of hosting matches here, as our home ground is being worked on.”

The goodwill gesture comes just days after The Black Berets stunned defending champions Gor Mahia with a 4-1 victory at Nyayo Stadium, the club’s biggest win since joining the top flight.

The decision to host matches at Kericho Green Stadium has drawn criticism from several top-tier coaches.

Earlier this month, Mathare United head coach John Kamau openly questioned the suitability of the pitch, likening it to farmland.

This is not a pitch for playing football… maybe for planting rice. It is in a very terrible state,” Kamau said after a 1–1 draw with APS Bomet at the venue.

Heavy rains a day before that match left the pitch waterlogged, forcing players to work twice as hard to circulate the ball while trying to avoid injuries.

Since earning promotion, Bomet are still chasing their first home win.

They have so far fallen 1-0 to Ulinzi Stars, 2-1 to Kakamega Homeboyz, 1-0 to Kenya Police, and 2-0 to Murang’a SEAL, but the latter was played at Gusii Stadium.

A move to Nairobi could offer the Black Berets a chance to stabilize their season and play on better surfaces as they continue adjusting to life in the top tier.
