After narrowly surviving relegation last season, Bidco released nearly 20 players and replaced them with youthful talent from the lower leagues
Bidco United head coach Anthony Akhulia is keeping his feet firmly on the ground despite a perfect start to the FKF Premier League season that has his side looking far sharper than last term.
The Thika-based club kicked off the campaign with a statement 1-0 victory over defending champions Gor Mahia on the opening weekend before edging newly-promoted Nairobi United by the same scoreline in Murang’a on Monday.
New signing Herman Ngala struck in the second minute to see his side pick the second win of the season and keep yet another clean sheet.
Speaking after the game, Akhulia, who also serves as the Kenya U20 assistant coach, said he was proud of his players’ effort but admitted there is still plenty of work to do.
“I feel really good because winning FKF Premier League matches is never easy, and those are two victories against very solid opponents. I am happy, but there is still a lot of work to do because after scoring, we tend to struggle to control the game,” he said.
Akhulia was quick to credit his backline for their solid display against Nairobi United , noting how the team defended with discipline and maturity despite being a newly assembled unit.
“The positive side is that we defended very well. We scored in the first minute and managed to stay compact for over 90 minutes, successfully protecting our lead. This season we went for young players. Looking at our backline, only Marcelo (Thomas Wainaina) has been with the team for three seasons. The rest are all new and young, and we are relying on their energy to see how far we can go,” he explained.
The coach also praised match-winner Ngala for his sharp performance but warned his players against complacency as the long season unfolds.
“I am pleased with Herman (Ngala), the scorer today. He did very well. But we cannot allow the players to get carried away. We still have 32 matches to go, so we must keep working hard and aim to collect at least a point, or ideally, the maximum three, in every game,” he said.
After narrowly surviving relegation last season, Bidco released nearly 20 players and replaced them with youthful talent majorly from the lower leagues.
Two matches in, that bold rebuild appears to be paying off, with Akhulia’s young side showing fight, structure, and promise.
