The 60,000-seater Talanta Stadium is set to become the largest and most modern facility in the East African region.
Touted as a state-of-the-art arena and a landmark development for Kenyan sport, the stadium has been selected as one of the key venues for the 2027 AFCON tournament, which will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania from June to July 2027.
Speaking in an interview with Sporty FM, Musonye, who was part of the Kenyan delegation that attended the 2025 AFCON in Morocco to benchmark facilities and preparations ahead of the 2027 edition, spoke glowingly about the project.
He described Talanta as one of the most advanced facilities on the continent and suggested it surpasses what he observed in Morocco, a country widely regarded as one of Africa’s leaders in sports infrastructure.
“Talanta Stadium will be one of the best stadiums to organise rugby and football in Africa, and I am proud to say this because I was in Morocco for AFCON and our Talanta is far more advanced, modern and very spacious compared to what we saw in Morocco.
Do not be cheated by the TV. What we have is the best in Africa, and I want Kenya to be proud of this.”
Musonye maintained that infrastructure preparations remain firmly on track and insisted Kenya is capable of hosting major ceremonial events during the continental showpiece, including both the opening and closing ceremonies.
“We have a good stadium that is coming up, and we shall be ready to host AFCON. We shall be ready to host the opening and closing ceremonies if we are given that opportunity. We are very ready.”
The LOC chairman also addressed lingering scepticism surrounding Kenya’s ability to stage major continental competitions, recalling similar doubts ahead of CHAN. He assured fans that the country would once again rise to the occasion.
“People were sceptical about us hosting CHAN; people were referring back to what happened in the past, but I assured people that we would host CHAN. And I once again want to assure that we are going to host the best AFCON in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.”
The 2027 edition of the Africa Cup of Nations will mark the first time the tournament is staged in East Africa under a three-nation hosting arrangement. CAF assessors have been in Kenya in recent days to evaluate the country’s level of preparedness ahead of the biennial tournament.
