Headlining the busy afternoon schedule from a Kenyan perspective will be youngster Faith Cherotich, who will be gunning to win her first senior global championship gold medal, as she lines up for the women’s 3,000m steeplechase final scheduled for 1557 EAT.

Cherotich, 21, is enjoying her coming-of-age year, and there is much optimism around her finally ripping the script to emerge champion.

Her quest to better two consecutive bronze medals in Budapest and Paris will not be made any easier, as the women who have stood her down in those occasions - Peruth Chemutai and Winfred Yavi - are all in the final, which promises to go down to the finish line.

Also in the run-in to grab a medal for Kenya in the race will be debutant and two-time NCAA Champion Doris Lemngole, who ran a personal best of 8:58.15 earlier this year.

In three head-to-head meetings between Cherotich and Yavi, the former holds a 2-1 advantage, and she will hope to see it extend.

The other Kenyan final on the day will see the duo of Timothy Cheruiyot and Reynold Cheruiyot attempt to win the men’s 1500m title at 1620 EAT..

The two namesakes have credit in their banks for having avoided the ‘bloodbath’ that has seen all of Jakob Ingebrigtsen, Azeddine Habz, Phanuel Koech and Cole Hocker tumble out of the competition despite looking heavy favorites.

Timothy, a former World Champion in 2019, is admittedly in search of a podium place, while Reynold, who has so often flattered to deceive, carries a chance thanks to his closing speed.

The race also features defending champion, who is apparently on cloud nine.

Kicking off the day’s action for Kenya will be the veteran and Team Kenya captain Julius Yego, who will target a place in the javelin final when he takes part in qualifying at 1445 EAT.

The 36-year-old, who will be taking part in his seventh World Championships event, will need to throw a mark similar to his season best of 84.51m to book an automatic place in Thursday, 18 September’s final.

His other route to that will be being among the top 12 at the end of the session.

Another man who will seek a place in the final will be Commonwealth Games bronze medalist Wiseman Were, who will line up in Heat Two of the men’s 400m hurdles at 1538 EAT.

Were, 27, marked his personal best in a solid performance in the heats on Monday, 15 September, and must be in the top two in his heat to be in Friday’s final.

Another final slot exists, should he be among the two fastest losers.
