The Rock 'n' Roll Marathon in San Antonio is approaching its final lap, with organizers confirming that the 2024 edition will mark the end of the event in the city.
Scheduled for the first weekend of December, the marathon will close a 16-year chapter for the Rock 'n' Roll Running Series in the Alamo City.
Since its inception in 2008, the event has brought together thousands of runners annually, becoming a cornerstone of San Antonio’s fitness culture.
However, participants received an email announcing that the Rock 'n' Roll series would not return to San Antonio after 2024.
Organizers explained that the city and San Antonio Sports, which have partnered with the series since its start, plan to launch their own marathon weekend beginning Thursday 5 to Saturday 7 December 2025.
The decision reflects the city’s growing running culture, driven by an increase in local participation, the expansion of trail systems, and the rise of running clubs.
Carolyn Wheat, a spokesperson for San Antonio Sports, said more details about the new event will be announced soon.
The Rock 'n' Roll San Antonio team expressed its gratitude to the city and its community for their support over the years.
“We wish the City of San Antonio and San Antonio Sports all the best, and most importantly, the San Antonio community who has graciously hosted us for 16 years. It is always our goal to deliver the best possible events to our participants, and we look forward to continuing to deliver an amazing set of races this December for everyone racing with us,” the statement read.
San Antonio Sports President and CEO Jenny Carnes also reflected on the partnership’s legacy.
“The relationship with the Rock 'n' Roll brand has been transformative for the health and wellness of our community. We are proud of what the event has meant to our city and grateful for the partnerships that positioned San Antonio as a great running destination,” he said.
The event has consistently celebrated local talent. In 2023, San Antonio runners Mark Saroni and Aliese Reus claimed victories in the men’s and women’s marathons, clocking times of 2:31:15 and 3:10:11, respectively.
