The Kenyan in the early stints of the World Athletics Elite Label event was closely followed by a trio of Spaniards - Aaron Las Heras, Jesus Ramos and Nassim Haasous.
That quartet covered the opening downhill three kilometers in 8:06, and shortly after the fourth kilometer, first Hassaous, and then Las Heras, ceded ground, while Kamworor and a brave Ramos remained at the helm to record 13:28 by halfway.
Ramos’s resistance came to an end some 19 minutes into the race when he simply could not follow the two-time world cross country champion’s brisk pace.
From then on, the 33-year-old Kamworor extended his lead to finish in 27:41, some 15 seconds clear of the 29-year-old Spaniard, while Las Heras completed the podium thanks to a 28:00 performance.
With the win, Kamworor, a double New York Marathon champion, joined fellow Kenyans such as Eliud Kipchoge, Mike Kigen and Leonard Komen, all of whom had tasted victory at the historic Madrid event.
Elsewhere in Europe, Kenyan youngster Charles Rotich finished sixth at the BOclassic Alto Adige road race, in Bolzano, Italy, also on Wednesday.
The 20-year-old, who was making his second appearance at the World Athletics Label race, was in the lead group in the first five 1250m laps, but faded at the end to clock 28:36.
The race was won by Ethiopia’s two-time world 10,000m silver medalist Yomif Kejelcha, who ran a course record of 27:42, taking 17 seconds off the time set by his compatriot Telahun Haile Bekele last year.
