Kerley's recent legal troubles began with a confrontation with Miami Beach police, captured on body camera footage
Olympic 100m bronze medalist Fred Kerley was released from jail on Saturday 4 January after posting bond following his arrest earlier in the week in Miami Beach.
The two-time Olympian for Team USA, faces multiple charges, including battery on an officer, resisting arrest, and allegations of domestic violence stemming from an incident last year involving his estranged wife, Angelica Kerley.
Kerley's recent legal troubles began with a confrontation with Miami Beach police, captured on body camera footage.
This incident led to charges of battery on an officer and resisting arrest.
On Friday 3 January, additional charges were filed against him, including domestic battery with strangulation and strong-arm robbery, related to an alleged altercation with his estranged wife Angelica in May of last year.
In an interview with CBS News Miami, Angelica described the May incident as a turning point in their relationship. She accused Kerley of physical violence during a confrontation in front of their children and his family members.
"All I remember [is] trying to get up, and he tries to grab my phone again. So, I scoot it under me, and he's standing over me at this point behind me.
He takes his arm and wraps it around my neck and proceeds to choke me so hard that I can't gasp for air. At some point, I thought he was going to kill me," she recounted.
Angelica added that her then-eight-year-old daughter tried to intervene during the incident.
"She saw him do this and tried to choke me again. My daughter was literally scratching at his eyes to get him off of me," she said.
Despite being approached by Kerley's defense team to speak on his behalf in court, Angelica said she decided to proceed with pressing charges.
“They asked me to be here and speak on his behalf, but I want to proceed on pressing charges against him,” she stated in bond court.
Angelica expressed concerns about the emotional toll on their children, criticizing Kerley for failing to consider their well-being.
“Seeing the video of this recent incident and how he was aggressive made me think he didn’t feel any remorse for what he did to me,” she said.
Upon his release, Kerley's attorneys addressed the media, focusing on the bodycam footage from his arrest.
"At this time, we look forward to working with the State Attorney's Office, helping in their investigation any way we can," said Yale Sanford, one of Kerley's attorneys.
However, they declined to comment on the domestic violence allegations.
In a statement, Kerley's legal team dismissed Angelica’s claims, calling them the accusations of a "highly motivated and angry woman."
The statement also rejected her assertion that Kerley had refused to grant her a divorce.
