The 18-year-old Queenslander clocked 10.00 seconds (+0.9m/s) at the Dane Bird-Smith Shield Meet held at the Queensland State Athletic Centre on Saturday, 21 February.

The time set a new Australian under-20 record, erasing the long-standing 10.15 mark set by Jake Doran in 2018.

Gout’s latest run places him agonisingly close to becoming just the third Australian in history to officially break the 10-second barrier.

The teenager had unofficially dipped under the mark twice in one day last April, but both efforts were wind-assisted and therefore not recognised as personal bests.

Only two Australians have legally breached the 10-second mark. Patrick Johnson’s 9.93, set in 2003, remains the national record, while Lachlan Kennedy joined the exclusive club last year with a 9.98 at a meet in Kenya.

Saturday’s performance also marked Gout’s first qualifying time for this year’s World Athletics Under-20 Championships, which he has prioritised over the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

The decision shows his long-term focus as he continues to build towards global success at the junior level.

His domestic schedule remains packed. Gout is set to compete in both the 100m and 200m at the Queensland Championships in Brisbane from Thursday 12 to Sunday 15 March, before lining up in the 200m at Melbourne’s Maurie Plant Meet on Saturday 28 March.

He will then contest the 200m at the open-age National Championships in Sydney from Thursday 9 to Sunday 12 April, followed by the junior nationals in Brisbane the subsequent week.

On the international front, he is scheduled to race over 200m at the Ostrava Golden Spike meet in the Czech Republic on Wednesday, 17 June (AEST), with potential appearances in one or two Diamond League events later in the season.
