Renowned for her dominance in the 1500m, Kipyegon continues to stretch her boundaries as she builds toward another potentially historic season.

The five-time world champion heads into the new campaign riding the momentum of a stellar 2025, where she clinched her four 1500m world title, and boldly pursued a sub-four-minute mile attempt in partnership with Nike.

Her decision to open with the longer distance reflects a deliberate shift in approach, aimed at sharpening endurance early in the season.

“I wanted to challenge myself early in the season and build strength. The 5000m is a great distance for that, and Shanghai is always a fantastic place to compete. I like coming to China and the timing fits perfectly into my program,” Kipyegon said.

The race in Shanghai will offer an early gauge of her form over a distance where she has already proven competitive against the world’s best.

Kipyegon revealed that her preparations have been smooth, with a strong training block at home in Kenya forming the foundation for her season.

“Training has gone very well. I’ve had really good months of training in Kenya where I focused on endurance and consistency, so I can say that I feel strong and ready to race again,” she noted.

While her legacy has largely been built on the 1500m, the 5000m presents a different kind of test, one she is increasingly embracing.

“The 5000m pushes me in a different way. It’s about patience, rhythm, and knowing when to make your move. I enjoy that challenge,” she added.

Heading into the Shanghai meet, Kipyegon is keeping her expectations measured but focused.

“My goal is to run a strong race, test my fitness, and start the season on a positive note,” she said.

Looking ahead, the Kenyan star hinted at an ambitious season, driven by a desire to keep evolving in an increasingly competitive women’s field.

“I want to keep improving, stay consistent, and give my best in every race. Last year showed me that I can continue to push my limits, that I enjoy challenges outside my comfort zone. We are racing with such a strong group of girls in every race, and I still have a lot to prove, so I’m excited for what’s ahead,” she concluded.
