World 10000m silver medalist Daniel Ebenyo has been shortlisted as one of the three finalists set to contest for the International Fair Play Award, celebrated as part of the World Athletics Awards 2023.

A week ago, Ebenyo’s moment at the closing stages of the men’s half marathon in the World Athletics Road Running Championships in Riga on October 1 - where he saluted his teammate Sebastian Sawe, who got past him to win gold - was among the six nominations for the award, with fans asked to vote for those that would make the final cut.

The five other nominees included: Letesenbet Gidey and Sifan Hassan, Shericka Jackson and Sha’Carri Richardson, Nina Kennnedy and Katie Moon, and Jessica Warner-Judd.

Following a week of fan voting on social media, and with the input of a seven member World Athletics jury - that includes multiple Olympic and world 800m champion David Rudisha - Ebenyo’s moment as per a Tuesday afternoon release, was ranked first place, securing its place in the final shortlist.

The other moment that will contest the Kenya’s, will be that of Ethiopia’s Gidey, who after winning the 10,000m race at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest last August, went back to comfort Netherlands’ Hassan after her dramatic fall on the home straight.

Britain’s Warner-Judd’s patience to be the only athlete that waited to shake hands with the last place finisher in the women’s 10000m final in Budapest after finishing eighth, also made the cut in third place.

This year’s award winner will be revealed on World Athletics’ platforms in the lead up to the World Athletics Awards in Monaco on 11 December.
