Cheruiyot secured a hard-fought win in the men’s Dream Mile, edging American Yared Nuguse in a thrilling photo finish to claim one of the biggest victories of his recent resurgence.
The Kenyan, the most experienced athlete in a highly competitive field, lined up against a strong cast that included Nuguse, Great Britain’s Jake Wightman, Australia’s Cameron Myers, American Hobbs Kessler, and fellow Kenyans Reynold Cheruiyot and Festus Lagat.
For much of the race, Cheruiyot remained tucked within the leading group without showing his hand. As the bell rang for the final lap, Nuguse, Myers and Kessler appeared best positioned to challenge for victory.
Nuguse looked destined to take the win as he led deep into the closing stages, but Cheruiyot produced a trademark finishing kick to launch a late charge. The pair crossed the line almost simultaneously, leaving spectators uncertain about the outcome.
The American celebrated what he believed was victory, but moments later the official result confirmed Cheruiyot had snatched the win by the narrowest of margins.
The victory marked a significant milestone for the 2019 world champion, whose performances have steadily improved throughout the season.
After several years battling injuries and inconsistency, Cheruiyot’s return to winning ways suggests he could be rediscovering the form that once made him one of the most dominant middle-distance runners in the world.
Elsewhere, Australian sprint prodigy Gout Gout was handed a reality check as he finished sixth in the men’s 200m on his Diamond League debut.
The 18-year-old entered the race carrying considerable expectations after impressive performances at junior level, but found the step up to elite senior competition challenging.
Competing against a field headlined by Olympic champion Letsile Tebogo of Botswana and rising South African star Sinesipho Dambile, Gout started well out of the blocks but struggled to maintain contact with the leading runners as the race unfolded.
Tebogo showcased his superior class, powering away from the field to clock a season’s best 19.84 seconds. Dambile finished second in 20.12 while Trinidad and Tobago’s Jereem Richards completed the podium in 20.20.
Gout crossed the line sixth in 20.60 seconds, unable to make the impact he had hoped for in his first-ever Diamond League appearance.
Despite the disappointing result, the teenager leaves Oslo with valuable experience as he continues his transition into senior athletics.
His next major test comes at the Ostrava Golden Spike meeting on June 16, where he is scheduled to face world champion Noah Lyles in the 150m.
