A total of three Kenyan athletes failed to advance to the next round of the 400m and 800m.
Reining 800m Commonwealth Games champion Wyclife Kinyamal got his title defense off to a flyer by booking a finals slot while Veronica Mutua also punched a semis ticket in the women’s 400m heat.
Despite the two qualifying for the semis and finals, the 800m men’s heat served up disappointments as Elias Ngeny and Cornelius Tuwei failed to advance to the final after finishing out of the top two bracket.
The 400m was also disappointing as Mary Moraa looked to deliberately finish last in the 400m women’s heat as she aimed to channel all her energies in the 800m where she eased to the semis on Tuesday.
In the 800m, Kinyamal looked to have followed the footsteps of the Ngeny and Tuwei who had their heats earlier but a strong kick in the final 150m saw him earn an automatic qualification slot.
Tuwei finished fourth in heat 2 at a time of 1:48.66 while Ngeny finished third in heat 1 stopping the clock at 1:49.53 but they both failed to qualify due to the fast times posted in heat 2 and 3.
Veronica Mutua finished fourth in heat 1 but still managed to seal a place in the 400m women’s semi finals after cutting the tap at a time of 53.02.
The 400m women’s semis is slated for Friday 5 August at 9:32 pm while the 800 men’s final is scheduled to gun off on Sunday 7 August at 7:35 pm.
