Commonwealth Games: Cheptai and Kiprotich seeking maiden Kenyan gold

Reading Time: 2min | Wed. 03.08.22. | 10:12

The race is scheduled to gun off at 10 pm (EAT).

Heading into the sixth day of the Commonwealth Games, Team Kenya will be hoping to mine their maiden gold medal in the women’s 10000m with hopes resting on the able shoulders of Irine Cheptai and Sheila Chepkirui.

The Kenyan duo will however face stern opposition from Uganda’s Stella Chesang who is the reigning champion in the 25 laps race after claiming gold in Gold Coast back in 2018.

Rachael Chebet from Uganda will be another athlete threatening the Kenyans to a podium finish after claiming silver in 10000m African Championships at the tail end of last month.

Sheila Chepkirui will be looking to make amends after missing the World Championships in Oregon last month due to visa related issues that led to a number of athletes missing out on the trip with 100m sensation Ferdinand Omanyala arriving late.

The 5000m gold medalist at the 2016 African Championships will arrive fresh at the Commonwealth Games with the race favorite Stella Chesang taking part in the World Championships back in July.

Chesang finished 14th in Oregon and despite her low rank she still managed to set a National Record after finishing the race at a time of 31:01.04.

Irine Cheptai will be looking to better her sixth place finish at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics when she takes to the track at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham, England.
