Omiyo’s suspension was communicated through a letter dated Wednesday, 26 November, after an accounts audit and internal investigations into the management and utilisation of club funds uncovered financial irregularities.
According to the club’s main committee, the chairman was allegedly found culpable of serious wrongdoing.
“The chairman is found guilty of gross misappropriation of club funds, which constitutes a serious breach of trust and violation of the standards expected from his office,” the letter states.
The committee further noted that the audit revelations had allegedly strained the club’s relationship with its main sponsor, prompting calls for restructuring and stronger accountability mechanisms to restore confidence and secure continued financial support.
“The audit, which was demanded and facilitated by our main sponsor, has left the club relations with the main sponsor at a state of circumspection with demands of restructuring to ensure transparency and accountability to win back the trust and retain funding,” read part of the letter.
As a result, Omiyo was suspended with immediate effect for a period not exceeding three months.
During this time, the club is expected to convene a Special General Meeting (SGM), where members will interrogate the audit report, evaluate leadership at the top, and chart the way forward for the club.
The suspended chairman was also instructed to immediately stop presenting himself as an official of Nakuru RFC and to surrender all club documents, assets, and materials in his possession to the club secretary within 48 hours.
“Fully cooperate with any follow-up processes that may arise from this matter. This decision is necessary to safeguard the integrity, stability, and future of Nakuru Rugby Club. We appreciate your cooperation during this transition,” the letter added.
However, Omiyo has dismissed the suspension, insisting he remains the club’s chairman.
“There’s no letter. There’s nothing like suspension,” he told Mtaa Wangu.
He also denied allegations of gross misappropriation of funds, terming the claims a political witch-hunt.
Omiyo further expressed concern that the power struggles and accusations could jeopardise the club’s sponsorship and negatively affect players’ welfare.
The suspension letter was signed by Nakuru RFC honorary secretary Wesley Kidinga and copied to the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) secretary, Nakuru Athletic Club, club patrons, and the Kenya Cup Chairmen Caucus.
The developments come against the backdrop of a major sponsorship boost for the club earlier this year. On February 11, Nakuru RFC secured a Ksh2.5 million sponsorship deal with Smart Applications International.
Wanyore currently sit eighth on the log with six points after three matches. They have managed only a win over Nondies RFC, and suffered two losses to Kenya Harlequin and Kenyatta University’s Blak Blad.
