The side was relegated at the end of the 2019-2020 season and has been unable to return to the top tier due to limited funding

Former Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) Kenya Cup side Western Bulls are calling on corporates and well-wishers to come to their rescue and help shoulder the financial burden.

The side that competes in the second-tier league risks missing several away matches due to insufficient funds to cater for the logistical needs.

They were demoted from the top tier in the 2019/20 season. It was that season that the league suffered the severe effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Their financial woes, however, seem to have started earlier. The team was sponsored by the renowned giant sugar factory Mumias before its (Mumias) troubles started, leading to them pulling out as the financiers.

Following that, Bulls have been surviving on handouts and well-wishers like the Chandarana Supermarket in Kakamega.

However, with the tough economic times, the going is getting more strenuous, the team has been surviving thanks to the goodwill of their fanbase

Speaking to Mozzart Sport, the club's chairman Martin Musonye noted that the team has survived this far, but they hit rock bottom.

Surviving these harsh conditions has been a testament to our players’ resilience and determination, however, to continue this journey, we need your support. The financial burden of sustaining the team has become overwhelming, and we are reaching out to our loyal fans and well-wishers for assistance. Your contributions will help us cover essential expenses, ensuring that the Bulls can keep charging forward for the remainder of the season,” Musonye explained.

Despite these constraints, the team occupies position six on the league log after five rounds.

They had to start the campaign on a low note after failing to travel to the Coast for the South Coast Pirates match and were deducted two points.

The side is coming from a 32-12 win over the United States International University (USIU) Martials in the KRU Championship week four action.

They will take a rest this weekend as they sharpen their claws to welcome Mombasa RFC in week seven action.
